AMADEO DE SOUZA-CARDOSO (1887–1918)

A pioneer of Portuguese modernism, Souza-Cardoso blended Futurism, Cubism, and Expressionism in a short yet brilliant career. His vibrant compositions were tragically cut short by the 1918 flu. His works are preserved at the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, and the Centre Pompidou.

"I do not imitate. I create anew, in my own time."
