FRANK STELLA (b. 1936)
A pioneer of minimalism and post-painterly abstraction, Stella's mantra "What you see is what you see" defined his early hard-edge works. Later, his paintings exploded into three-dimensional forms, merging painting, sculpture, and architecture. His art is held by MoMA, the Whitney, and the Guggenheim.
"Abstraction is real, probably more real than nature."
